The production of a photographic image always has an inherent intention, which could be described very generally as capturing a moment or a situation or constellation. The intentions of the production can be manifold, they can be well-intentioned or not. In any case, taking photographs intervenes in the scene in which they are produced. Images can intentionally hurt or try to be politically effective. Pictures can be deliberately not shown or presented, for example, in the UN to justify wars. Images can be used as evidence for facts while at the same time being called "alternative facts". Images have become part of our everyday communication in so-called social media and are used as conversational images (A. Gunthert), perhaps serving entirely new purposes.
